I'd go back to that general region and dig some tunnels around on the same Z-level to see if you crack anything open. they entered the upper level of a fairly spacious underground cavern. It has taken me forever to dig down just 4 floors. I've been gradually exploring earlier levels here and there, just no success so far. Im in year 7 with 140 dwarves (only 2 miners) and my main floor is Z level 147. Each cavern layer spans multiple z-levels, and is filled with water to a certain degree. Using only one level forces flying creatures to walk around when pathing through your fort. It *is* possible to dig right past without cracking into it, so I'd go back up and try some exploratory tunnels. The wiki tells me to expect my first cavern around 10 or 11 z-levels down from the surface.
